Listening

Have you ever realised how much you don’t listen to what people are saying?

I will strongly admit I have am terrible at this. As soon as I stop speaking I am already thinking about the next thing I need to say and not even listening to what the  person opposite me is staying. Now, this isn’t being very present is it?

Since reading Richard Carlson’s – Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff – Number 29 “Become a better listener”, I have started to listen just a little bit and noticed it has made a huge difference in becoming more present.

If you are listening more, you will notice people’s emotions. For example, what they might be passionate about, what they might enjoy or whether they might be fearful or anxious. Observing this, I have found opens up a better understanding of your friends and family plus also you will be surprised that you will actually learn something.

Also, as Richard Carlson says, this will help you build better relationships as everyone likes to feel they are being listened to.

So go on, give it a try. Stop and Listen. Absorb the words, engage, make eye contact, smile and nod, or be compassionate and understanding.
